It’s impossible to see the images from Puerto Rico and not think about how the animals must be suffering. So when we were asked by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) to join a multi-agency initiative to help, we didn’t hesitate.
Today a BVSPCA team deployed to Madison, New Jersey, to lead animal care at a temporary shelter setup by HSUS. Over the next five days, the shelter will receive more than 400 animals that were in shelters prior to Hurricane Maria. They’ll receive medical care and transport to other shelters and rescues, including BVSPCA facilities. The first transfers to our campuses are expected by Monday.
This is the second time we’ve deployed a team into a hurricane relief initiative. Earlier this month we sent a team to Houston following Hurricane Harvey. The team setup intake and medical protocols at a temporary Pet Reunion Pavilion established by Best Friends to relieve local shelters while extending the amount of time families have to find their pets.
And that’s not all. In the past month, we’ve welcomed more than 120 animals from overcrowded shelters in Texas and Florida following hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Many from the most recent transport are waiting for families in our West Chester and Georgetown Campuses.
All of this is on top of the work we do locally every day to help hundreds of pets in the state of Delaware and in Chester and Delaware County, Pennsylvania. We’re able to step up in these difficult times thanks to you and our community.
Please lend your support to our hurricane relief efforts and all the animals with nowhere else to turn by making a donation today.

Founded in 1929, the Brandywine Valley SPCA is the first open admission shelter in Pennsylvania to achieve No Kill status and serves as the only open admission shelter in both Chester and Delaware Counties. In 2015, the BVSPCA opened its first Animal Health Center in Malvern, Pennsylvania, making veterinary care more accessible to local residents. In 2016, the BVSPCA took on a five-year contract with the Delaware Office of Animal Welfare to provide state-wide animal services, and expanded its reach further into the tri-state area by opening both a second shelter and a second Animal Health Center in New Castle County, Delaware. Shortly after, a PetSmart Everyday Adoption Center was opened in Dover, Delaware. Its mission is to put the “human” back in humane animal treatment and to advocate on their behalf. Each year, the BVSPCA cares for more than 10,000 stray, owner-surrendered, wayward owned, and abused and neglected animals. For more information, please visit www.bvspca.org.
