Making an Impact: 7,000+ Lives Impacted in DC in 2025

The year 2025 has been one of expansion for the Brandywine Valley SPCA as we opened our doors in Washington, D.C., assuming animal control and care services for the District. Our partnership with DC Health marked a transformative step forward in animal welfare for D.C., with a goal of bringing our expertise in animal care, progressive sheltering policies, and lifesaving programs to the nation’s capital.

We’re thrilled to have achieved our goal of reaching the No-Kill level of lifesaving in our very first year of operation with a 93% live release rate for our D.C. locations. We also opened the District’s brand new, state-of-the-art shelter and animal health center to better serve animals and pet families.

In the District alone, we cared for more than 7,000 homeless animals, averaging 20 animals arriving daily, 71% of whom came to us as strays. We reunited 537 of those pets with their owners, celebrated 2,610 adoptions, and welcomed 482 pets surrendered by their owners.

Local pets and pet families in need remain a top priority, and thanks to your help, we are able to provide vital health, wellness, and safety net services. This offers much-needed assistance to families in need, helps keep pets healthy and in their loving homes, and decreases the number of unplanned litters.

As the District’s animal control provider, we bridge the gap between public safety and compassionate care for pets and wildlife. By integrating field services with our sheltering operations, we protect our neighborhoods and educate pet owners, creating a more humane community for both residents and the animals who share our streets. These results lay the foundation for continued growth and expanded services for DC animals and families in 2026.

As an organization, we, once again set new records for saving the lives of homeless pets and supporting pet families of all of the communities we serve, thanks to your support. Across our entire footprint, spanning Pennsylvania, Delaware, New Jersey and Washington, D.C., we increased the number of animals in our care by 33% compared to 2024, with an average of 75 animals arriving daily, more than half of whom came to us as strays.

Despite the challenges that come with serving as one of the only open-access shelters in our Pennsylvania regions, as well as the only open-access organization for the entire state of Delaware and Washington, D.C., we maintained our no-kill status, saving lives and bringing joy to countless homes.

We cannot do this work alone. It takes a true community effort to make all of this possible. The impact in 2025 and all that’s ahead in 2026 happens thanks to you - our generous donors, sponsors, our kind community, and our dedicated staff and volunteers. You play an important role and share in every life we save. Thank you.
