BVSPCA Deploys to Kentucky Following Deadly Tornado

75 Shelter Dogs & Cats Rescued to Help Pets Impacted by Deadly Tornado

Our saying “When the going gets tough, the BVSPCA gets going” has never been more true than following the deadly tornados in Kentucky late Friday, December 10, and into the early morning hours of Saturday, December 11th. As soon as we saw the devastation Saturday morning, we started planning.

Mobilizing to Kentucky

We teamed up with the ASPCA and connected with Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) to identify the best way to help. With several Kentucky shelters damaged and many towns facing massive destruction, we all decided the best way to assist would be to quickly help empty KHS. That would enable KHS to accept pets from Mayfield and other communities impacted by the tornados.

By Sunday morning, just 24 hours after hearing of the tornado damage, our team was on the road to Kentucky with our rescue bus. As soon as our team arrived at KHS on Monday morning, the KHS team’s vans mobilized to Mayfield to help the damaged shelter there, knowing they would now have space to assist. Our team pulled 75 dogs and cats and drove straight home, arriving at our  Animal Rescue Center (ARC) in Georgetown at 2am.

These 40 dogs and 35 cats were available for adoption before the storm. They will start going up for adoption at our campuses on Wednesday. Some will also go to regional shelter partners.

How You Can Help

We’re doing this work on top of our regular daily work to help lost and stray animals, cruelty victims, and pets needing rehoming. We need your support to help the homeless pets and people of Kentucky at this critical time. Make a donation to support this disaster relief work and consider welcoming one of these rescues into your home if you’ve been thinking about adopting.

We’ll keep you posted as the work evolves. We’re grateful to have you in our community as part of #TeamBVSPCA!
