Free canine influenza and distemper vaccines are available at Brandywine Valley SPCA Animal Health Centers in New Castle, Dover, and Georgetown.
Dog owners can register for an appointment at one of the three locations through Friday, August 9. Each person can register up to two dogs per appointment.
Participants will bring their dogs to the Animal Health Center for the free vaccine appointment and will be scheduled at the time of the first vaccine for the second booster vaccine appointment at the same location.
Advance free registration is required.
The free canine influenza vaccines are made possible through local support from longtime supporters of BVSPCA and animal welfare advocates Tatiana and Gerret Copeland through Reggie’s Fund. Since 2015, the Copelands have supported the BVSPCA’s Reggie’s Fund, named after their beloved dog, to cover critical medical needs when families cannot afford to care for the pets they love.
“We are grateful, now with the support of Tatiana Copeland, to be able to provide even further protection to the pet community with these free vaccines for owned dogs,” said Adam Lamb, BVSPCA CEO.
“Brandywine Valley SPCA is always ready to be a leader when crises near and far happen, and this action to provide vaccines to the public demonstrates that leadership in this critical time for our state,” said Tatiana Copeland. “We are honored to support this free vaccine initiative for dogs in our community as a way to provide access to protection for beloved family pets.”
The free distemper vaccines are provided by Petco Love's national vaccination initiative. BVSPCA’s collaboration with Petco Love’s initiative helps provide more free pet vaccines for family pets in need, ensuring no pet goes without proper care.
BVSPCA began taking drastic measures to protect shelter dogs following a control order issued by the State of Delaware Department of Agriculture in response to a Canine Respiratory Disease Outbreak. These measures included vaccinating all dogs in, and coming in to all BVSPCA Campuses for canine influenza.
Our work is about both pets and people. We're staunch advocates for the safety and quality of life of pets in our community. We feel just as strongly about helping people care for their pets. That could be helping to reunite lost pets with their families or helping during times of need with programs like our pet food pantry, behavior counseling and safekeeping for the pets of domestic violence.
Help offset the burden of the costly canine influenza vaccines, administered to all BVSPCA shelter dogs. Your generous donations also will be used to help cover costs of the medical care we have been providing, and will continue to provide, to the animals in our population who have been affected by the upper respiratory infection.
