Effective January 1, 2025, the Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA) will provide animal control services in the District on behalf of DC Health. As the District's contractor, the BVSPCA is responsible for the following:
Animal field services
Complaint investigations
Dangerous dog investigations
First, check if the animal has a tag or other form of identification.
If the animal doesn’t have one, please call BVSPCA at (202) 888-PETS. One of our dispatchers will ask you for a description of the animal and its location.
Please call BVSPCA at (202) 888-PETS. Our officers are responsible for investigating all animal bites that occur in the District.
Reports of animal cruelty in the District are investigated by the Humane Rescue Alliance. If you suspect an animal is being neglected or abused, please contact HRA at (202) 723-5730. More information on animal abuse and neglect can be found on HRA’s website.
If you see an animal walking erratically (in circles, unsteady) or extreme lethargy, DO NOT approach the animal and call us immediately at (202) 888-PETS.
BVSPCA and DC Health will continue to partner with City Wildlife to ensure that wild animals receive the appropriate care. If you find a sick or injured wild animal, please call City Wildlife at (202) 882-1000 every day, 9 am - 5 pm. During off hours or for issues involving other wildlife (bears, deer, foxes, raccoons & bats), please call BVSPCA at (202) 888-PETS.
