Duties & responsibilities

Veterinary Resource Center

  • Treat animals humanely, with love and concern, both on and off the job and transmit these values to others.
  • Obtain patient histories from clients and communicate pertinent information effectively to the veterinarian.
  • Prepare patients for surgery, assist in surgery, and monitor anesthesia under the direction of the veterinarian.
  • Assist doctors and other technicians in performing various medical procedures.
  • Perform intramuscular and subcutaneous injections.
  • Administer medications to animals as directed by the veterinarian.
  • Perform venipuncture, laboratory tests, radiographs, IV catheter placement, and drug and fluid calculations as ordered by the veterinarian.
  • Fill medications as prescribed by the veterinarian.
  • Clean and pack surgical instruments.
  • Operate an autoclave.
  • Ensure the clinic area, surgery suite, and exam rooms are cleaned and sanitized DAILY to prevent the spread of disease.
  • Ensure clinic equipment is cleaned and maintained properly.
  • Comply with all laws pertaining to controlled substances.
  • Embrace a positive attitude at work and be willing to work towards and contribute to team success.
  • Approach all interactions with coworkers, volunteers, and clients with respect and grace.

Administrative Duties

  • Utilize the clinic software and other related computer programs to maintain accurate medical records.
  • Maintain and create patient records by accurately recording treatments, examinations, and test results in clinic software.
  • Assist with receptionist duties as needed: answer phones/emails/messages, schedule appointments, admit patients, discharge patients, process payments.
  • Assist with keeping inventory and ordering supplies.

Client and Customer Service

  • Admit and discharge animals in a responsive, courteous, and tactful manner.
  • Inform clients of any pertinent medical information regarding animal care; communicate detailed release instructions.
  • Practice and encourage the humane treatment of animals.
  • Provide quality customer service to clients, volunteers, and staff while actively promoting our mission, services, programs, and events.
  • Promote donation and giving opportunities as appropriate.

  • Ensure a safe work environment by following all safety guidelines and modeling safe work practice.
  • Take immediate action to address any safety concerns that could put a staff member, volunteer, client, animal, or the organization at risk.
  • Maintain a clean, healthy, and sanitary work area.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of HSHA.
  • At least one year’s experience working as a veterinary technician, and/or completion of a Veterinary Technician program, preferred.
  • Experience with humane animal handling and restraint techniques of healthy, ill, fractious, and/or scared animals.
  • Knowledge of basic dog and cat physiology, anatomy, and behavior, as it relates to understanding the general health of animals.
  • Comfortable working in the shelter environment and willing to accommodate animals in the workplace.
  • Computer literate and able to professionally communicate verbally and through email.
  • Self-motivated and able to initiate and complete tasks.
